Housing agent fined for forgery - David Wee Sim Chye

Housing agent fined for forgery

A REAL estate agent who forged a tenancy agreement was fined $4,000 on Thursday.
David Wee Sim Chye, 47, who runs his own business YMB International, had admitted to fraudulently signing the signature of the tenant on the landlord's copy of the tenancy agreement on May 26, 2007.
A second similar charge involving the landlord was considered during his sentencing.
A district court heard that in May 2007, Wee found a tenant, Mr Warren Duplantis, an American ship builder, for Mr Pek Kain Hock, 51, owner of a Parc Oasis apartment, at a monthly rental $4,800.
In October that year, the tenant met Mr Pek to discuss about the early termination of the tenancy agreement due to certain issues.
The victim told Mr Pek that his signature in the tenant's column in the copy of tenancy agreement with Mr Pek had been forged.

REINING IN ERRANT PROPERTY AGENTS

6 complaints a day

IN THE 19 days since it was set up, the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA) has received a total of 72 complaints or about six every working day, about errant property agents.
Till Nov 10, about one in two complaints to the CEA was about unprofessional agents or the quality of service they provided.
Complaints about misrepresentation, alleged fraud, disputes on commission and bickering between agents made up the rest.
The council can now only refer complaints involving disputes on commissions and contractual matters back to the agents, who will be tasked to provide the CEA with a report within 14 days.
Said a spokesman: 'If they are unable to resolve the dispute, CEA will advise consumers to go to mediation centres such as the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) or the Singapore Mediation Centre.'
The council can also issue warning letters to errant agents for acts such as distributing fliers containing misleading information.

Woman fined for perverting justice - property agent Leung Man Kwan

Woman fined for perverting justice

WHEN she beat a red light in 2008, a friend who was then a police officer suggested that Evangeline Tay Su Ann pay $1,000 for another woman to take the rap.
On Tuesday, Tay, 22, was fined $2,000 for perverting the course of justice. Tay, who is studying for a business degree at the Singapore Institute of Management, said through her lawyer that she intends to appeal against the sentence.
Both the police officer and the other woman were jailed earlier.
Former deputy superintendent of police Kelvin Choo Yew Beng, 40, was sentenced to six months in jail in April last year for recruiting Leung Man Kwan to take the rap for Tay. Leung, 35, a property agent, was jailed for three months in 2009.
In Tay's case, District Judge Jill Tan said psychiatric reports indicated there was a 'causal link' between her depression and the committing of the offence. As she had kept on the right side of the law since 2008 and there was little chance of her repeating the offence, the judge found that it was not necessary to impose probation or a jail term.
Tay, who is believed to have appeared in men's magazine Maxim in 2007, had pleaded guilty late last year.

CJ sends a signal to young drivers

A PROBATIONARY driver who caused a fatal accident will now be barred from taking the wheel for six years, not one, after a successful appeal by prosecutors.
Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, who extended the driving ban on property agent Gabriel Lim Yong Han, 22, said on Thursday: 'I should send a signal to young and inexperienced drivers that they should exercise care when they drive... if they don't and cause a death, then they should be disqualified for a long period.'
Lim's probationary driving licence was just eight months old when he drove his father's lorry across a pair of white lines along Braddell Road in December 2008, cutting into the path of a taxi in the next lane and then hitting it.
The collision at 1.50am on Dec 27 left the taxi's rear passenger, accountant Tan Sheng Ping, 28, seriously injured. Ms Tan, who was not wearing a seat belt, died in hospital 1-1/2 hours later.
Cabby Teo Cheng Liang, 41, also hurt, was given three days of medical leave.
Last October, Lim pleaded guilty in a district court to causing Ms Tan's death through negligence, and to injuring Mr Teo, also through negligence.

A WOMAN who abused her Indonesian maid four times within four days was sentenced to six weeks' jail on Thursday.
Juliana Ayob, 34, a property agent and a former designer, was also ordered to pay $1,500 compensation to the maid, Ms Biyanti Marsono, 31. She is appealing against conviction and sentence.
Earlier this week, District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam had found her guilty of assaulting the maid between Jan 3 and 6 last year at her flat in Bukit Merah Central.
The maid started work at the household on Dec 30, 2008. Four days into her job, Juliana scolded her for alleged poor cooking. Juliana then slapped her, pinched her arm and pulled her ears. She also used a wooden ladle to hit her nose twice, and there was blood the second time. Later that day she kicked the maid on the right knee for preparing drinks that was too sweet.
Ms Biyanti was abused again the next day. On Jan 6 when Juliana twisted and pulled her ear and hit the back of her neck with a book, she fled. She had wanted to meet her agent but ended up at Safra Club at Telok Blangah Way where she sought help.
Juliana could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined up to $7,500 on each charge.
